The Little Mermaid

A series of illustrations I worked on for my university project. I had actually written a short story inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid, but my tutor at the time wasn't enthusiastic about the story I wrote. So, we agreed on using the original text, which I still think is a shame after all those years ;).

As my original story was about deformed mermaids (caused by harmful substances released into the Ocean) I wanted the mermaids in the book to appear different from the 'traditional' mermaid look.

This was probably one of the test illos I've drawn before starting on a whole set of illustrations

Again, another test image. I intended for these to have an eerie and strange appearance, far from the bright and cheerful Disney film. However, I had second thoughts and ended up changing the look and feel a little bit in the end. (See the first illustration for the final version that made it into the book).
